Our Daily Bird 33: The Innocence Mission
A song from the Innocence Mission's 1998 release, Birds of My Neighborhood:
As for her songwriting process, Karen says, "Often for me a melody and chords will spill out together. The lyrics will take longer to finish - sometimes I'll work on them for weeks over even a month. "The Lakes Of Canada' was written after driving through Canada on a tour with EmmyLou Harris. I wonder a lot about the towns we're passing through, the shady side streets; who lives there and what their lives are like. The song is about moments of sudden joy and how they glimmer the way fish do when you see them in a lake" (from Acoustic Guitar, Birds of a Feather).

So I clicked the link with hesitation, Elle_Ann, because Karen Peris has fantastic music but I can't connect with her voice. Friends tell me she has the voice of an angel. Most of them love her but I've tried. And you'd think I'd connect because I like me a different voice as you know. But no.
Maybe it's the lakes and most likely it's Emmylou :) but I like this one. And I really like the part where it says "Lyrics Unknown" over this unbelievable picture (unbelievable even when you are there or once lived right down the road and rarely went to visit). I think that freeze frame would make a great poster.
Phew. I'm relieved to hear your ears were pleased :-). I confess I'm a fan of Karen's voice but I think it's because it sings such gorgeous lyrics.
And the "lyrics unknown"...well, they're a mystery to me, too, because even though I have the liner notes for the CD, those aren't included.
I haven't seen this lake in over 30 years...yes, a freeze frame print of it would be wonderful wall art.
Thanks so much for your comment. It's enhanced my appreciation of the song & this YouTube version of it.
The next time I'm stumped I may just say "lyrics unknown". Another Hedge T-shirt...
Brilliant. I would buy and wear it. (Would also be a great name for a blog -- maybe we should quickly register it.)
