Jordon Cooper:
Writing a biography is hard enough, but on a group blog it is even harder because of the stress that yours may not be that clever... or may be too clever... or it sounds like you are trying to be clever but not too clever. I'm taking the easy way out. Here are ten things that you probably never wanted to learn about me. In no particular order.
- I am married to Wendy. We have two sons named Mark and Oliver and a family dog named Maggi. Of all the dogs that I have ever owned, Maggi is the worst. She's strong and aggressive and hogs the covers when she sneaks up on the bed at night. I hate that. We also have a dog named Hutch. Hutch is the kind of canine that if not domesticated, would be eaten by an owl in the wild. He's my brother's dog and got left behind when my brother moved out. We think of Hutch as a boarder and try not to get too emotionally attached. Normally this would scar a dog emotionally but Hutch is a dog of little brain and as long as he can pee on the hydrant, he is fine with life.
- I work at the Salvation Army Community Services in Saskatoon as their Residential Coordinator. In other words, I work with homeless men and youth all day long. It's a stressful job but I wouldn't want to do anything else.
- In the past I have delivered flyers, worked in a library, built doors for jails, built concrete basements, run for office, designed websites, was the world's worst shipping clerk, pastored a small rural church, worked in a large urban church, worked in a grocery store and sold computers. Of all of those jobs, working in the grocery store was the most enjoyable.
- I have lived in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan since 1984 but only recently have stopped thinking of myself as a Calgarian. That makes sense as I was born in Edmonton.
- In 2008 I ended a twenty-year relationship with hockey. Hockey said some things, I said some things... now we check each other out on Facebook and it's really awkward.
- I haven't read much fiction since I finished Jim Kjelgaard's trilogy about Big Red but I do enjoy reading big books of non-fiction about unfamiliar topics. Well, as long as they are not about math. A couple of years ago I spent almost $80 and ordered Stephen Wolfram's book, A New Kind of Science. The book weighs a ton, is almost 1200 pages long, and I don't understand any of it. So now I have this book that is almost the size of a Volkswagen Beetle, a reminder that I wasn't very good at algebra or trigonometry, and of course there are quite a few times since the book came that $80 would have come in handy.
- Three summers ago I bought a small rustic cabin sight unseen. It's a little over 300 square feet and is a tight fit for four people and two dogs but it's a great place to escape to when we want to get out of the city, away from technology, and just be a family.
- I am a big fan of Les Stroud and Survivorman. Not to the point where I go off without food or water for a week and see if I can survive in the wild but now I bring my Swiss Army knife with me wherever I go.
- People are often shocked by it, but I am a huge sports fan and love the history of sports. In order of obsession: the NFL (Denver Broncos), NCAA football (Notre Dame), NCAA basketball (Michigan), MLB (Toronto Blue Jays), CFL (Saskatchewan Roughriders), and then America's Cup sailing. Seriously. I am from Saskatchewan and love the America's Cup.
- I enjoy turnips. Wendy hates turnips. When I get her to make some, she always mashes my turnips because she can't believe someone would actually enjoy them.
